İz Öztat at the exhibition Self-Determination: A Global Perspective at Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) (07/01/2024)

Self-Determination: A Global Perspective is the culmination of a three-year research project focusing on the new nation-states that emerged in the wake of the First World War, exploring the role of art and artists in relation to the expression of national identities, nation-building, and statecraft. This exhibition explores some of the common cultural strategies that emerged across many of the new nation-states including Finland, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, and Egypt, against the backdrop of the international movement towards self-determination, most famously articulated by Woodrow Wilson at the Paris Peace Talks in 1919. The exhibition is on display from 28 October 2023 to 21 April 2024 at Garden Galleries, Main Galleries, East Wing.

Moderated by IMMA director, Annie Fletcher, an artist talk was held with the participating artists including members of the Array Collective (Emma Campbell / Laura O’Connor), Jasmina Cibic, Declan Clarke, Minna Henriksson, İz Öztat and Larissa Sansour on November 29, 2023.
