Jaffa Lam at the exhibition Green Snake: women-centred ecologies (02/01/2024)

The exhibition Green Snake: women-centred ecologies, curated by Kathryn Weir and Xue Tan with assistant curators Tiffany Leung and Pietro Scammacca, focuses on the connections between art and the larger themes of ecology in the context of rising temperatures and extreme weather  events. The exhibition presents over 60 works that draw on mythologies and world views with women at their heart to explore possibilities for other ecological relationships and imagine other futures. The exhibition takes place from December 20, 2023 to April 1, 2024 at Tai Kwun Contemporary.

Jaffa Lam calls up the presence of Tin Hau, one of the most celebrated deities in southern China who is associated with the sea. Within the confines of a narrow staircase, the artist presents a suspended volcanic rock from Fujian, the birthplace she shares with the sea goddess, symbolising the reincarnation of Tin Hau and also the artist’s connection to her ancestral roots. Lam renews Tin Hau worship through this magical presence, while also pointing to how processes of urban development separate Hong Kong from the natural elements.
